Victor Feldman

victor feldmanBorn in 1934 he was a child prodigy playing professionally from the age of seven and quickly became a multi-instrumentalist playing piano, vibes, drums and percussion as well as composing and arranging for his bigger ensembles.Victor Feldman His family were all musical and his father founded the Feldman Swing Club in London in 1942 to show off the talents of his gifted son. His first professional appearance was playing drums at No 1 Rhythm Club as a member of the Feldman Trio with brother Robert on clarinet and Monty on piano accordian. In 1944 he was featured at a concert with Glenn Miller's AAAF band, featured inevitably as "Kid Krupa". Carlo Krahmer encouraged Feldman to play the vibes which he did first in the Ralph Sharon Sextet and later in the Roy Fox band. He worked in India in 1952 and 1953 in a band led by pianist Eddie Carroll. On his return to England he played for a while in Ronnie Scott's Orchestra.

By now his massive musical talent was so obvious that he decided to try his luck in the US and emigrated in September 1955 to join Woody Herman. He was a significant contributor to the UK jazz scene and made a number of records in various musical settings, returning from time to time to record with Ronnie Scott, Tubby Hayes and Jimmy Deuchar, for the Tempo label. Iin 1957 he settled in Los Angeles permanently and was lost to the British jazz scene. He then specialized in lucrative session work for the US film and recording industry.

A good cross section of his work is available on CD. He recorded with a number of groups of differing sizes but his own big band, assembled for the studio, was the most interesting. Using his own themes and his own arrangements together with first class musicians the listener hears something original. He died at the early age of 53, a year after the death of his wife, to whom he was completely devoted.
